What’s the difference between a “hard mattress” and a “soft mattress”?
Dec. 17, 2024
When someone refers to a "hard mattress" or "soft mattress," they are describing the firmness level of the mattress, which determines how much the surface resists compression when someone lies on it. Setting aside the fact that for every individual the words "hard" and "soft" have different meanings and that there are no industry standards we'll try to explain below in a general sense what these terms mean.
1. Hard Mattress (Firm):
- A hard or firm mattress feels more solid and supportive with minimal sinkage. (The hardest mattresses are all foam).
- The surface remains relatively flat, offering consistent support for the body, particularly the spine.
- Often preferred by people who:
- Sleep on their back or stomach (since a firm surface keeps the body aligned).
- Have back pain or need extra support.
- Are heavier and want a durable, supportive feel.
Pros:
- Promotes better spinal alignment.
- Prevents the body from "sinking in," which can be beneficial for posture.
- Generally more durable.
Cons:
- May feel too rigid for those seeking comfort and cushioning.
- Can cause pressure points for side sleepers.
2. Soft Mattress (Plush):
- A soft mattress is more cushioned and allows the body to "sink in" more, contouring around the curves.
- It provides a cradling sensation, often described as "sleeping in" the bed rather than "on" it.
- Commonly favored by people who:
- Sleep on their side (as it cushions shoulders and hips).
- Prefer a more luxurious or plush feel.
- Are lighter-weight individuals.
Pros:
- Offers more pressure relief, especially on joints like shoulders and hips.
- Ideal for side sleepers who need the mattress to conform to their curves.
- Provides a cozy, enveloping feeling.
Cons:
- Can cause spinal misalignment for back or stomach sleepers.
- May not provide enough support for heavier individuals and will often reduce the useful lifespan.
- Can retain more heat depending on materials used because they are in contact of a larger because your body sinks deeper into the mattress.
Summary:
- Hard Mattress = More support, less sinkage, ideal for spinal alignment.
- Soft Mattress = More comfort and cushioning, ideal for pressure relief.
Many people now opt for a medium-firm mattress (latex is best) , as it balances support and softness, appealing to a wide variety of sleepers. Nine Clouds Beds can guide you on selecting the right firmness level for specific needs. Please visit our Mississauga showroom.
