Guide to Buying a Luxury King (71" × 79") Mattress

This guide will help you confidently choose a luxury king mattress sized 71" × 79" (also known as 180 × 200 cm), a common international king size.

1. Confirm the Mattress Size

The 71" × 79" mattress is not the same as a U.S. standard king.

  • Target size: 71 inches wide × 79 inches long

  • Metric equivalent: 180 × 200 cm

Before purchasing:

  • Measure your bed frame to confirm compatibility

  • Measure doorways, staircases, and elevators

  • Verify that sheets, mattress protectors, and duvets are available in this size. Nine Clouds Beds can help with these.

Some retailers may label this size as “Luxury King” or “European Kiing".

2. Chose the Right Mattress Type

Memory Foam (Shortest useful life span)

  • Excellent pressure relief and motion isolation

  • Best for side sleepers and couples

  • Look for cooling foam or breathable covers because meory foam is hot.

Hybrid (Foam + Coils)

  • Balanced comfort and support at a not breaking the bank price

  • Better airflow than all-foam mattresses

  • Suitable for most sleep positions

Latex (Best for long term comfort)

  • Naturally breathable and durable

  • Responsive feel rather than sinking

  • Often preferred by hot sleepers or those wanting eco-friendly materials

3. Match the Mattress to Your Sleep Style

Recommended firmness by sleep position:

  • Back sleepers: Medium-firm to firm

  • Side sleepers: Medium to medium-soft

  • Stomach sleepers: Firm

  • Combination sleepers: Medium

Body weight also matters:

  • Lighter sleepers may prefer softer comfort layers

  • Average-weight sleepers usually prefer medium firmness

  • Heavier sleepers often need firmer support and denser materials

4. Consider Temperature Regulation

Luxury mattresses often include cooling features such as:

  • Gel-infused or open-cell foams but they do not hold up as well as hybrids or latex (best)

  • Breathable coil systems

  • Natural layers like latex

If you sleep warm, hybrid or latex mattresses are usually better options.

5. Check Foundation and Base Compatibility

Make sure your mattress works with:

  • Platform beds

  • Slatted bases with proper spacing

  • Adjustable bases (if desired)

Using the wrong foundation can affect comfort and void the warranty.

6. Budget Expectations

Typical price ranges for luxury king mattresses:

  • Entry-level luxury: $1,000–$1,800

  • Mid-range luxury: $1,800–$3,000

  • High-end luxury: $3,000 and above

Higher prices reflect better materials, durability, and craftsmanship.
