Just because you managed to squeeze a queen size mattress down your narrow, folds back on itself, stairs doesn’t mean you’ll be able to get it out.

I know it's a a very vivid and accurate observation, but honestly, it's a common moving-day tragedy. Mattresses are surprisingly flexible going in when you’ve got gravity and adrenaline on your side, but when it’s time to move out, those same tight corners and stair turns suddenly turn into a puzzle from the dark side.

If you’re in that situation, a few tricks can help:

  • Use a mattress bag to make it more slippery and protect it.
  • Bend it carefully; most foam mattresses can fold temporarily if you tie them with straps or rope, though you should avoid doing this with mot hybrid/innerspring ones.
  • Try rotating it vertically; sometimes flipping it sideways gives just enough clearance.
  • Remove handrails or door trim; that can give you an extra inch or two that makes all the difference.

You're certainly way better off buying an all foam mattress (latex is best) because they can usually be bent safely. Coil mattresses can sometimes be bent but often you'll just damage them (and your walls and stairs) and possibly invalidate your warranty.
Hiring professional full time movers to handle the job is highly recommended.
