If I am 5’10” should I buy a regular double or a twin xl size adjustable bed?
Jul. 08, 2025
If you are 5’10” (70 inches tall), here’s how a Regular Double (Full) compares to a Twin XL adjustable bed:
Twin XL (80” long x 38” wide)
- Length: 80 inches → Plenty of length for your height (10 inches to spare)
- Width: 38 inches → Narrower than a full/double, but okay for one person
- Adjustable base friendly → Standard for adjustable bed setups
- Can be combined with another Twin XL to make a King (ideal for couples)
Full/Double (75” long x 54” wide)
- Length: 75 inches → Just 5 inches longer than your height. Your feet may hang off a bit, especially on an adjustable bed where the head/foot tilt could reduce usable length.
- Width: 54 inches → Wider than Twin XL, more space to move around.
- Less common in adjustable formats, and may be less available.
Feature |
Twin XL | Full (Double) |
---|---|---|
Dimensions | 38" wide x 80" long | 54" wide x 75" long |
Length Fit for 5'10" (70") Person | ✅ Excellent – 10” extra for legroom | ⚠️ Tight – Only 5” extra; feet may hang off, especially on adjustable beds |
Width | Narrow (good for one person) | Wider – more room to move or fit a pet |
Comfort for Solo Sleeper | ✅ Comfortable – standard width for single sleepers | ✅ Comfortable – more side-to-side space |
Comfort for Two People | 🚫 Too narrow for couples | ⚠️ Possible, but tight for two adults |
Adjustable Bed Compatibility | ✅ Very common and widely available | ⚠️ Less common – limited base options |
Modular Options (e.g., Split King) | ✅ Can be paired to create a King bed | 🚫 Not modular – fixed size |
Availability of Adjustable Bases | ✅ High – standard in most adjustable models | ⚠️ Moderate to Low – fewer models available |
Ideal For | Taller solo sleepers, flexible upgrade options, standard adjustable bed use | Sleepers who prioritize width over length and are okay with limited adjustability |
Best Choice for 5'10" on Adjustable Bed | ✅ Recommended | ⚠️ Only if width is more important than leg comfort |
Recommendation:
Go with the Twin XL adjustable bed.
It gives you more legroom and is a standard size for adjustable bed bases, especially if you’re sleeping alone. The only reason to pick a Full would be if you strongly prioritize width over length and are okay potentially losing some comfort for your legs.
