How important is thread count when choosing new bed sheets?
May. 23, 2023

Thread count is a measure of the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric in both the vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft) directions. Traditionally, a higher thread count was believed to indicate better quality and comfort in bed sheets. However, the importance of thread count has been somewhat overemphasized and misunderstood.

While thread count can provide a general indication of fabric density, it is not the sole factor that determines the overall quality or comfort of bed sheets. Other factors such as fiber type, weave, and finish play significant roles as well.

Higher thread count sheets are often associated with a softer and smoother feel because they use finer yarns. However, very high thread counts (above 800 or 1000) may not necessarily result in superior quality. Some manufacturers achieve extremely high thread counts by using multiple-ply yarns, which can artificially inflate the count without improving the actual quality. Additionally, higher thread counts may make the fabric more prone to pilling or decrease its breathability.

The type of fiber used in the sheets, such as cotton, linen, or synthetic materials, also affects their overall feel and performance. Each material has its own characteristics, and personal preferences can vary.

Instead of focusing solely on thread count, it is advisable to consider other aspects like fabric quality, fiber type, weave (e.g., percale or sateen), and personal comfort preferences. Look for trusted brands known for their quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. It's also beneficial to read customer reviews and feel the fabric in person if possible.

Ultimately, when choosing bed sheets, it's essential to prioritize your personal comfort and preferences over thread count alone.

(My personal favourite in bed sheets is a 50/50 blend of Bamboo and Cotton)
