Does a mattress need to be on a box spring?

Cheap mattresses are not built of high enough quality materials to last no matter what they are placed on but better quality mattresses can be used with any platform/slatted type bed so long as there are at least 14 slats from head to toe in a queen size bed as below.
There must also be strong center support for your beds slat system. If you don't have proper support you most likely will not be able to make a warranty claim on your mattress should something go wrong.
