Are the hinged mattresses found in motor homes as comfortable as regular mattresses?
Sep. 28, 2024
Hinged mattresses, often found in motorhomes or RVs, are designed to be flexible for space-saving and storage purposes, allowing them to fold as needed. However, they tend to differ from regular mattresses in terms of comfort due to a few key factors:
- Material: Hinged mattresses are typically thinner and may be made from different materials (foam, memory foam, or latex). While memory foam, and even better latex, options can be very comfortable, thinner mattresses tend to provide less support than a traditional, thicker mattress.
- Support: Regular mattresses often have a more robust support system (like innersprings, hybrid layers, or thicker foam cores on the best models). Hinged mattresses may not provide the same level of support, especially because it's designed to fold and stow away.
- Durability: Since hinged mattresses are used in space-saving contexts, they may not last as long or hold their shape as well as regular mattresses that are designed for permanent beds. Having said that they normally are not used every night of the year like in you permanent home.
- Portability vs. Comfort: Hinged mattresses are more focused on being adaptable and easy to move, but that sometimes comes at the cost of comfort associated with standard in home mattresses.
Some RV owners enhance the comfort of hinged mattresses by adding mattress toppers or switching to higher-end memory foam (or even better latex designs). If comfort is a primary concern, it's worth trying out different options and possibly upgrading the mattress if your budget allows.
